Many of us pet parents have thought a time or two especially as new pet parents that we really messed up our pet! Perhaps from our lack of skill or experience we are now dealing with behaviors that weren't there before or issues that weren't so obvious previously are now becoming more apparent. If you're wondering why your dog is now lunging at other dogs, your cat is now eliminating on the wrong side of the litterbox or your birds are now screaming, we need to understand how animals express themselves through their behavior, just like humans.
Animals' physical needs of food, water, shelter are not their only needs. All animals, including humans, have emotional, mental and spiritual needs. When any of these needs are not met this causes imbalances to the rest of their system. For example, a dog chained to a dog house has a big bowl of food and water with some shelter from the elements. This is not meeting their full needs. This dog needs exercise, mental stimulation, emotional connection and a sense of belonging. The dog needs to spend quality time with you giving and receiving attention and affection, it's a mutual need for both animal and human.
Dogs provide companionship and understand human emotions and cues. Animals love us and this offers us deep healing. People can help animals to be balanced by providing them what they need on all levels to fulfill all of their needs. This helps animal and human to understand one another with compassion and empathy and helps to promote a more compassionate and caring world where both humans and animals thrive.
